How to Light Up Your Home - Fenton & Fenton

How to Light Up Your Home

Lighting is an essential element in your home, both functionally and aesthetically. Not only does it brighten and set the mood of a space, it also adds interest and dimension, helping create a sense of space and making your home more liveable.

Whether you are looking to lighten up a little nook, add some drama to your dining space, dress your entrance or add an ambient glow to your outdoor entertaining zone, we have options and tips for every room in your home.

LAYER IT UP

The key to good lighting (and design in general) is layering. When choosing lighting for a space, make sure you consider the different types of lighting - accent, task and ambient. Distribute a variety of lighting sources throughout your space to really get your glow on.

CREATE A FOCAL POINT

Allow the eye to wander over a space, and then create a visual hook with a statement pendant or lamp. By decorating a room to emphasise a key piece, you instantly add energy to your space. Consider proportions, materials, colour and pattern. Or, use lighting to emphasise or illuminate another feature in your room such as artwork.

MIX TO THE MAX

Don't be afraid to choose bold, unusual designs. Something a little fun or quirky will make you (and others) smile when they enter your room. Mix vintage with contemporary, bright with neutral and feminine with masculine styles to create a look that's all yours.

TAKE IT OFF CENTRE

The answer isn't always a single central pendant. Hanging a chandelier in a corner, a cluster of pendants over an entertaining zone or placing a dramatic floor lamp behind a sofa create atmosphere and mood.

BLOW IT OUT OF PROPORTION

At Fenton & Fenton, we love playing with proportion in unexpected ways. Have a room missing certain oomph? A large-scale pendant, chandelier, table lamp or set of constellation lights could add the drama that's missing.

VINTAGE LIGHTS ADD INSTANT GLAMOUR

Luxe materials and bold designs add personality to a space. We love pairing vintage pendants with sculptural table lamp to double the light source. The contrast of styles creates visual tension and adds depth to the room.

USE MISMATCHED PAIRS

For bedrooms, we love mismatching table lamps, especially if your tables are a matching pair. Consider mixing materials, styles and colours to add interest and depth and create pockets of lighting at different heights.

DON'T FORGET THE BATHROOM

An often over-looked room in the house for statement lighting is the bathroom. We recommend getting your task lighting right first and then adding ambient lighting for long spa-like baths. A decorative chandelier or pendant really finishes a room.

MAKE AN ENTRANCE

First impressions count, yet all too often the hallway or entrance becomes a dumping ground or neglected pocket of a home. We say yes to making an impact when people step through your door. Make a style statement with our sleek new range of table and floor lamps. Tall floor lamps can create the illusion of height in rooms or hallways with low ceilings, and can often work instead of or alongside a pendant light too.

BUILD A VIGNETTE AROUND A LIGHT SOURCE

We are a little obsessed with arranging groupings of objects atop consoles and tables. Try building your vignette around a light source, such as a table lamp for a welcoming ambience. And, don’t be afraid of layering pieces in front of your artwork or other things. It’s the richness of layering mentioned earlier that turns a house into a home.
