Meet Natalie Steer
Natalie Steer is an abstract artist based in Victoria’s Alpine region In Australia. Her work explores ritual, symbology, and energy through automatic painting, embodied movement, and gestural mark-making. Rooted in nature and the subconscious, her intuitive process uses colour as a language of feeling and form to express modern emotional landscapes.
For the Ola Mexicola Art Series, Natalie drew inspiration from the everyday beauty of Mexican courtyards and kitchens — playing with colour palettes lifted from local architecture, food, and handmade objects. The result is a collection of small, expressive works that invite presence and reflection.
We spoke with Natalie about the inspiration behind her work, connection to colour, and how she hopes these works might live in the spaces of others.

Inspiration Behind the Work
For this collection I played with colour palates inspired by Mexican architecture, food like shrimps and fruit mixed with day to day items like ceramic bowls and vases. My aim was to capture the feeling of stepping into a Mexican courtyard or kitchen, catching small poetic moments without telling the story too literally.
Where the Work Belongs
I imagine the work living in the homes of collectors who love handmade originals with a human touch. I hope it charges a space with the same energy that goes into making it. I think people drawn to the work will appreciate the authenticity of the approach - the way the paintings and their handcrafted frames can be a little wonky, even slightly unhinged at times. In a ‘perfect’or minimalist room, they might not match the space but one of these small works could give it life. Alternatively in a maximalist space they could look like they have always been there.

If I Had a Day in Mexico...
If I could spend the day in Mexico, I’d start in the markets - exploring the stalls of wall shrines, jewelry charms, textiles and ceramics, taking in the colours, textures and vintage pieces and chatting to the local makers. Then I would finish the day at a cantina with my son and our friends enjoying Mexican food and drinks with live local music.
