Carrie Matheson’s recent artworks have been described as “still life with an implied narrative.” She approaches painting much like short story fiction - each composition offers fragments of a story, revealing just enough to spark curiosity while leaving space for the viewer to wonder about the scene beyond the frame.

Her subjects span the nostalgic and the feminine, the adolescent and the everyday, drawing attention to the quiet beauty found in ordinary objects.

Her recent shift from abstraction to realism began as a challenge: to paint a glass ashtray full of smoked cigarettes. The task was both frustrating and rewarding, but the duality of the object - ugly in its consequences yet wrapped in nostalgic allure - proved too compelling not to pursue further. This tension continues to guide her
exploration of objects that hold memory, meaning, and contradiction.
