Meet Liam Murphy
Liam Murphy is a New South Wales based artist whose work brings a riot of colour, humour and human energy to every piece. What began as a lifelong habit of doodling has evolved into a distinctive visual language; an electric clash of form, pattern and palette. His work is both sophisticated and childlike: looping lines and hypnotic repetition that echo a busted TV signal or scratched vinyl, somehow made beautiful.
Working from his garage studio beneath the Norfolk Pines, Liam paints with joyful chaos. His lines are methodical yet manic, his colours unexpected and full of life. Each piece sits somewhere between nostalgia and noise, structure and spontaneity.
For the Ola Mexicola Art Series, Liam leant into what he does best: colour, joy and a playful energy that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
We spoke with him about his influences, his love of colour, and the kind of joy he hopes his work brings into people’s homes.
How did the Ola Mexicola brief and its Mexican influences inspire your work?
Colour was the main influence for me, as it generally is!

What story or mood do you hope your work brings to this collection?
Joy and happiness!
Where do you imagine your Ola Mexicola piece living-in what kind of space or setting?
Hopefully somewhere prominent and important for the owner, preferably hung amongst other artists.
How do you hope people will feel when they live with your artwork?
Joyful! Happy!

If you could spend a day in Mexico, where would you go and why?
I would arrive very early on an empty stomach, eat all the tacos and end the day prostrate on the beach drinking margaritas.
Name three words that sum up the feeling of Ola Mexicola for you.
Happy, happy, joy, joy. (sorry, I know that's four but I'm a big Ren and Stimpy fan).
