ARTIST BIO

Polly Dawson

Polly Dawson is a contemporary artist based on the Gold Coast, Queensland. Working at the intersection of figurative abstraction and geometric painting, her practice distils the human form into bold, simplified compositions where gesture takes precedence over anatomy and colour carries equal emotional weight.
Entirely self-taught, Dawson developed her visual language by trusting intuition, embracing experimentation, and allowing each work to evolve instinctively. Her paintings balance restraint with expression, inviting viewers to experience identity and human connection through gesture, intuition, and bold fields of colour.
Dawson sees painting much like dancing. There are moments when movement feels effortless, as though the rhythm carries you without thought. Then there are times when the rhythm is lost, the steps are forgotten, and frustration takes over. It is in those moments of uncertainty that her practice finds meaning; slowing down, listening, letting go of expectation, and rediscovering the rhythm through instinct. Each painting becomes an exploration of surrender, where small, intuitive decisions build into something honest, expressive, and deeply human.
